More than 1,000 people died during this year’s Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia due to extreme high temperatures, with over half of the fatalities being Egyptians. Egypt revoked the licenses of 16 travel agencies for facilitating unauthorized pilgrimages. The Saudi government has not commented on the deaths.

Officially, Egypt reported 31 authorized pilgrims died due to chronic diseases, but an additional 630 Egyptians died, mostly in Mecca’s Emergency Complex. Saudi authorities expelled many unauthorized pilgrims, yet numerous Egyptians reached Mecca without hotel accommodations, suffering from the severe heat. The officials spoke anonymously as they were not authorized to brief journalists.
