A 4-year-old Andean bear named Ben escaped his enclosure at the St. Louis Zoo for the second time in a month. Despite stainless steel clips being added to his habitat, Ben was able to break through them due to his strength.
He was found in the zoo’s River’s Edge area and safely returned to his indoor holding area. The zoo is coordinating with internal and external parties to prevent future escapes.
In the meantime, Ben will remain in a temperature-controlled, non-public area receiving proper food and enrichment. Andean bears are endangered, with fewer than 18,000 estimated to survive in the wild.
