Singapore’s total fertility rate dropped to a new low of 1.05 in 2022 despite government efforts to encourage families to have more children. The latest figure is lower than the previous record of 1.1 set in 2020, and Japan’s rate for 2021. Indranee Rajah, the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office, attributed the decline to factors such as people marrying later, caring for older family members, and the Year of the Tiger in the lunar calendar, which is associated with lower birth rates among the Chinese. Critics argue that Singapore’s high cost of living, especially for housing, is a deeper cause.
