According to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Globocan Report 2020, Malaysia has one of the highest rates of cancer in the world, with 48,639 new cases reported in 2020. WHO predicts that the country’s cancer incidence is expected to double by 2040. The Malaysian Society of Paediatric Haematology and Oncology has also reported that 77.4 per million children under the age of 15 have been diagnosed with cancer.
Awareness on cancer
Due to the alarming incidence rate of cases, including in children, Lions Clubs International D308B2 collaborated with Sri Kota Specialist Medical Centre for their “Program Kesedaran Kesihatan and Kanser Kanak-kanak” initiative. The event was held at Dewan Orang Ramai in Bandar Baru Banting and aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness of sickness among the public.
The event included health talks by health experts such as SKSMC’s Consultant Clinical Oncologist Dr. Ina Shaliny Duraisamy, who spoke on the sickness and the individual and National Cancer Society Malaysia’s Psychosocial Support Coordinator Sri Ram Seetha, who spoke on “Childhood Cancer.” They also organised a Zumba session for participants to promote a healthy lifestyle and offered free health screenings, blood donation drives, and a colouring contest for children.
The initiative was aimed at increasing awareness of prevention and early detection, encouraging regular health screenings, and educating people about lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of the deadly disease.
