However, Malaysian netizens have largely reacted negatively to the PETA movement, with some arguing that religious vegans are not imposing their lifestyle on others, and many are stating that veganism is an expensive and unbalanced diet. One Twitter user criticised what they called “vegan zombies” and argued that the lifestyle should not be aggressively promoted just because a Western organisation advocates for it.
Another Twitter user likened veganism to a multi-level marketing scheme, claiming that vegans force their lifestyle on others to gain new recruits. A third user argued that a vegan lifestyle is expensive and often unbalanced, while a fourth criticised the environmental impact of veganism. Overall, many Malaysians seem to be against the vegan movement, viewing it as an extreme and costly lifestyle that is being imposed on others.
