Drastic To Ban Vape and Cigarettes In Malaysia, Says Anwar

Queried by MPs on the idea of a blanket ban of vapes and cigarettes in Malaysia, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says it is quite drastic to do so.

He says the government’s decision to remove nicotine liquids and gel used for vapes from the Poisons Act 1952 is one step, though some MPs remark is that the move means that the substance is now legal in Malaysia.

Drastic Measures No More

Anwar says that while the government will continue to run campaigns to raise awareness about the negative effects of smoking and vaping, it will also tax vape liquids containing nicotine at 40 sen per millilitre to deter their widespread use. Since Apr. 1, 2023, vape liquids containing nicotine are taxed at 40 sen per millilitre in Malaysia.
