That was in 2019 and it was done by Microsoft Japan in an experiment in which the company granted its 2,300 employees five consecutive Fridays off, all while maintaining regular pay. This initiative defied Japan’s reputation for extended work hours and rigorous work ethics. Surprisingly, the result was increased efficiency during meetings, heightened employee satisfaction, and a notable boost in productivity.

Other companies that have done such tests have found their productivity is boosted. Perpetual Guardian, the New Zealand estate management firm was one of the first to go public with a research-backed assessment of its trial. It found that productivity was unharmed by the shortened work week, while staff stress levels were dramatically improved. Recruitment firm ICE Group in 2022 became the first company in Ireland to adopt a four-day week for all its staff.
