Back in the 1940s and 1950s, haute couture models were exclusive to thin White women. However, Alla Ilchun broke barriers when Christian Dior found her as his muse. She then went on to become the first ever Asian woman to break the haute couture scene in France. Her look became a trend among the upper class societies of Europe.

Alla Ilchun, Christian Dior’s first Asian model
During the second World War, Alla Ilchun worked with the French Resistance against Germany. After the war, she went for multiple castings and was accepted to work for Christian Dior. She had a mixture of Kazakh and Russian blood.
“Alla belongs to the category of natural born models”, a quote by Christian Dior himself. This all happened before celebrities took the throne of natural born models to become the face of these houses. Not many know that a luxury fashion house back in the 1950s broke barriers and won against the discrimination against non-White people.
