Terengganu’s “Kampung Cina” Making PAS Face Controversy Over Proposed New Name “ChinaTown”

A statement made by Dr Khairuddin at-Takiri states that Harakahdaily reports Terengganu’s government plans to rename “Kampung Cina” to “ChinaTown” for commercial appeal to attract foreign tourists. This shift from Malay to English raises concerns about preserving the National Language and the motivations behind such changes. 

Terengganu’s Kampung Cina facing controversy 

Retaining the original name is urged, given the Chinese community’s proficiency in Terengganu dialect Malay. Netizens are clearly upset at this entire ordeal as the name change signifies the redundancy of the Malay language. 

Users state that the current name is a much better name than ChinaTown as the Malaysian language is used to identify the district’s name. Netizens state that PAS is ironic as they claim to defend the country’s majority religion but at the same time, they’re pulling stunts like these.
