Many elderly individuals applying for Malaysian citizenship struggle to pass the Malay language proficiency test, according to Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution. The passing score is set at ‘8,’ while a failing score is as low as ‘1.’ Sometimes, individuals scoring just ‘2’ are granted citizenship. Nasution attributed this issue to most older applicants being fluent only in their mother tongue.
