90% of HIV Cases in Malaysia Are Men in their 20s, Says Report

The 2024 Global AIDS Monitoring Report reveals that 90% of HIV patients in Malaysia, totaling 85,283 individuals, are men. The largest infected age group in 2023 was 20-29 years old (44%), followed by 30-39 years old (31%).

Selangor recorded the highest cases in 2023. Professor Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman cited unprotected sex and lack of HIV prevention knowledge as primary factors. Stigma surrounding HIV patients hinders treatment access, contributing to the spread.

The report shows that 84% were aware of their status, with male-to-male sexual activity being the main transmission route. Awareness campaigns are needed to encourage annual testing.
