KUCHING, Oct 23 — Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg is expected to announce the dissolution of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly at a special press conference scheduled for 3.30pm today at the Satria Pertiwi Complex here.
The anticipation follows growing speculation over the past several days that the state government is preparing to call a fresh election before the current assembly term expires in February 2027. Political observers have pointed to recent developments, including the completion of the assembly’s final sitting, as indicators that an electoral contest could be imminent.
The Sarawak Legislative Assembly concluded its last meeting of the current term on Wednesday, during which the Sarawak Budget 2027 was debated and approved.

The passage of the state budget has fuelled expectations that the government may seek a new mandate from voters in the coming weeks.
If the assembly is dissolved, the Election Commission will be responsible for setting nomination and polling dates for the state election.
In the previous Sarawak election held on Dec 18, 2021, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), led by Abang Johari, secured a commanding victory by winning 76 of the 82 seats contested. Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) captured four seats, while the Democratic Action Party (DAP) won the remaining two seats.
The expected announcement is likely to officially trigger the state’s election process.
