KUALA LUMPUR: The Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) clarified that five teenagers set to be charged tomorrow will only face allegations of bullying Zara Qairina Mahathir, not causing her death. It said the charges fall under Section 507C(1) of the Penal Code, covering threatening or abusive communication, punishable by up to one year’s jail or fine. The AGC stressed an inquest on Sept 3 will determine the cause of the 13-year-old’s death. Zara’s family lawyers had urged prosecutors to invoke Section 507D(2), which carries harsher penalties if provocation leads to suicide. The AGC dismissed their claims as speculative.
