KOTA BHARU: Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has reaffirmed the wing’s opposition to any cooperation between Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) ahead of the next general election.

Akmal said his earlier pledge to stay out of the Melaka state polls if BN were to cooperate with PH was made on behalf of Umno Youth, rather than in his capacity as the Merlimau assemblyman.

“My stance is that of Umno Youth. We are steadfast that we do not want to work with PH,” he said at a press conference after attending the PAS Youth muktamar here today.

BN-PH Cooperation

Akmal said he was uncertain about the position of the party’s central leadership but stressed that the youth wing remained firm in its stand.

In January, he had called for Umno to leave the unity government and revive Muafakat Nasional, the electoral pact formed by Umno and PAS in 2019.

However, he said Umno’s decision to remain in the unity government until the end of its term would be respected.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the wing would organise a Muslim unity gathering with Umno before the 16th general election.

He said the event would be open to people of all races who supported peace, unity and wellbeing.
