Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will file a fresh representation to the Attorney General after his first bid to have a charge of causing public alarm dropped was rejected, The Star reported on Monday (Oct 26), citing Sinar Harian.
The Akmal fresh representation application was made by his defence team at the Bukit Mertajam Magistrate’s Court on Monday, when the rejection of the first representation was conveyed during a case mention.
First representation rejected
According to the report, the first representation was submitted about 10 months ago, seeking to drop the charge under Section 505(b) of the Penal Code.
Akmal, 38, is accused of making a statement causing public alarm, allegedly posted on the Akmal Saleh Facebook page at 3pm on Aug 11, 2025. He pleaded not guilty in August last year and was granted bail of RM5,000 with one surety.
“We will submit another representation to the Attorney General after this,” lead counsel Aizat Azam was quoted as saying.
The prosecution was led by Penang state prosecution director Muna Mohamed Jaafar, while the case mention was before Magistrate Roshayati Radellah. Akmal arrived at the court complex at 9am, accompanied by his wife, Datin Dr Fatin Nadhirah Idrus. Penang Umno Youth chief Mohd Hilmi Elias was also present, the report said.
Decision on Akmal fresh representation set for Jan 4
The court fixed Jan 4, 2027 for the decision on the second representation. The Star reported that the case has run for more than a year without a trial date, with the defence awaiting the Attorney General’s decision on whether it will proceed to trial.
Judicial review still pending
Separately, Akmal’s legal team has filed a judicial review against the Attorney General over the authority to prosecute him. Aizat said the matter remains at the case management stage.
An online case management at the Penang High Court is scheduled for Tuesday (Oct 27), where the defence will ask for another date, according to the report.
The Star noted that in August 2025, Akmal led about 500 supporters from Umno, Bersatu and PAS on a 1.4km march in Bertam, Kepala Batas, held to show respect for the Jalur Gemilang after a flag was displayed upside down at a hardware store. He was later called to give a statement at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.
