A woman in Andalusia, Alabama, nearly lost her home after unknowingly sending her mortgage payments to scammers for two years, WDHN reported, prompting the city’s police chief to warn residents about increasingly convincing fraud schemes.
Police Chief Hudson said some local victims have lost between $20,000 and $40,000. The chief said the sad truth is that police can almost never get the money back, because much of it is quickly moved to overseas accounts.
Scams police say are common
- A caller claiming to be from the US Marshals Service who threatens arrest unless money is paid
- A message saying you have won a Publishers Clearing House prize but must first pay a fee
- Unexpected calls, emails or messages demanding immediate payment or offering prizes that seem too good to be true

Residents who get a suspicious call should ask for a callback number and independently verify the caller’s identity before giving out information or sending money, the chief advised.
