Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Putrajaya will await a detailed briefing from the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) before deciding Malaysia’s response to new US tariffs.
Malaysia Waiting for MITI Briefs on Tariffs
The Trump administration recently imposed a temporary 10% tariff on all imports, later raised to 15% after a Supreme Court ruling struck down emergency trade powers. Anwar confirmed MITI Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani had given an initial explanation, with further discussion scheduled at Friday’s Cabinet meeting.
MITI is studying the impact, coordinating with Washington and ASEAN partners. The US is Malaysia’s third-largest trading partner, with RM367 billion trade in 2025.
