KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26, 2026, A sharp rift has emerged within Malaysia’s Unity Government as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi traded barbs over the escalating royal crisis in Negeri Sembilan.

The controversy erupted after Menteri Besar Datuk Ismail Lasim and his state executive council endorsed the dethroning of Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir. Speaking aboard a high-speed train in China, Anwar condemned the move as “rude, uncivilised, and unacceptable,” stressing that state leaders have no mandate to alter the ruler’s position.

He warned that any action by the Undangs must strictly follow constitutional bounds, vowing that the Federal Government would safeguard national security and institutional dignity (source).

Zahid, however, struck a different tone in Ayer Keroh, cautioning against “rushed judgments.” Without naming Anwar, he urged leaders not to label actions as “disloyal” or “rude” before fully grasping constitutional nuances. He argued that leadership must “untangle complexities with knowledge and wisdom” while upholding institutional dignity (source).

The exchange underscores growing internal friction as the Federal Government navigates a sensitive standoff involving royal authority, customary law, and state power.
