Astro Sells Broadband Business to Maxis in RM83 Million Deal

Astro Malaysia Holdings Bhd is exiting the broadband business just four years after entering the market, agreeing to sell its subscriber base and related broadband assets to Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd for up to RM83 million. The deal involves 178,631 active subscribers as of the end of February, giving Maxis an immediate opportunity to expand its home connectivity business. The transaction could reshape competition in Malaysia’s broadband market as telecommunications providers pursue integrated mobile and fixed-line services.

Maxis Expands Home Broadband Reach Through Acquisition

Under the agreement, Maxis will acquire Astro’s broadband subscribers along with associated contracts, software, equipment and inventories. The deal excludes Astro’s brand name, trademarks and goodwill. The final purchase price may be adjusted depending on how many subscribers successfully transfer to Maxis when the transaction is completed. Maxis plans to fund the acquisition using internally generated funds, while both companies will arrange post-completion support to help maintain service continuity during the transition.

Astro Refocuses on Content and Entertainment Operations

The sale supports the company’s decision to concentrate on its core content, advertising and entertainment businesses rather than continue operating its broadband service. Completion remains subject to the necessary approvals, including Astro shareholder approval and regulatory clearance from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. If completed as expected, the transaction will strengthen Maxis’ subscriber base while allowing Astro to redirect its attention towards its main media operations.
