At least 11 dead in Indonesia earthquake

At least 11 people have been confirmed dead in the two days since a powerful earthquake hit Indonesia’s island of Sumatra on Friday morning, leading more than 13,000 people to flee their homes.

Officials know of 388 people who have been wounded and more than 14,000 buildings destroyed while other villagers are believed to be buried under tons of mud that the earthquake sent tumbling down from surrounding hills.

No Tsunami

The earthquake reached a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale – strong enough to create extremely dangerous tremors. Officials say the quake was not forceful enough to trigger a tsunami.
