A 45-year-old Australian man was charged with making a fake bomb threat on a Malaysia Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur on Monday. The man, who was reportedly agitated, claimed he had explosives in his backpack which caused the flight to turn back to Sydney. The incident caused havoc in the country’s airspace, with 32 domestic flights being cancelled and others delayed.
Aussie Man Charged
The man is expected to appear in court on Tuesday. A video taken by a passenger appears to show the man, who was wearing a backpack, threatening passengers and staff. Passengers who were onboard Malaysian flight MH122 will be transferred to the next available flight. Malaysia Airlines in a statement said the aircraft is being thoroughly inspected by police after 199 passengers and 12 crew safely disembarked at 7 pm Australian time (Yesterday).
