Azuar was playing at the beach with three relatives, aged between two and 11, at about 9.30am when the dogs approached. His relatives managed to escape, but Azuar fell while trying to run away and became the target of the pack.
He reportedly attempted to flee into the sea before a member of the public came to his rescue. He was semi-conscious after the attack.
The boy underwent five hours of surgery the following day to treat his injuries. His mother said he remained frightened and withdrawn for two days, sometimes crying because of the pain.
However, his condition improved on Sunday and he was able to speak and recount what happened. The Kelantan Education Department said the incident was believed to be the first serious stray-dog attack involving a student.
