One parent has ditched Spotify for CDs after becoming concerned about what their 8-year-old daughter was encountering while trying to explore music independently.
The parent initially wanted their daughter to have the freedom to discover artists across genres including rock, pop, hip-hop and folk. But Spotify quickly became distracting, with the child scrolling through songs, watching short videos and encountering AI-generated music while searching for topics such as narwhals and axolotls.
Spotify Was Too Distracting for My 8-Year-Old So I Switched to CDs
The final straw came when searches produced playlists with sexually suggestive artwork, prompting the parent to stop allowing their daughter to navigate the streaming service alone.
Instead, they introduced her to a CD player and a growing collection of discs. The parent says the physical format gives their daughter freedom to choose music from a collection they have already approved, without algorithms, notifications or distracting videos.
The switch has also changed the parent’s own listening habits. CDs encourage them to listen to entire albums rather than relying on personalised playlists, while liner notes and physical artwork offer a more immersive experience.
The family has since discovered artists including Lucinda Williams and Bill Evans, while revisiting old favourites. The parent hopes the experience will help their daughter develop a deeper relationship with music away from the constant influence of algorithms.
