A Batik Air passenger was arrested after allegedly trying to open an emergency exit mid‑flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kochi, India, causing panic among travellers.
The incident occurred aboard flight OD231, a Boeing 737, between 9.30 PM and 11.05 PM on August 5 while the aircraft was cruising at altitude.
Batik Air Security Files Complaint After Mid‑Air Scare
An Instagram user, ourwanderinglives, described the ordeal as “extremely frightening,” saying passengers were jolted awake by a loud rushing sound. The suspect, later identified as Jamsheer Athanikkal, allegedly damaged the inner window panel and attempted to tamper with the door.
Fortunately, the aircraft’s pressurisation system prevented any breach.
Cabin crew and nearby passengers acted swiftly to restrain the man until landing. Upon arrival at Kochi International Airport, Kerala Police arrested him and filed charges under Section 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Section 11A of the Aircraft Act, and Section 118(e) of the Kerala Police Act for endangering public safety.
Batik Air’s security team lodged a formal complaint, and investigations are ongoing. The flight landed safely, but the terrifying episode has reignited discussions about in‑flight safety protocols and passenger behaviour.
