Penang Elections: PH Faces Critical Challenge

1 min read

GEORGE TOWN, Aug 7, 2026 – Pakatan Harapan (PH) faces a serious challenge in retaining Penang as Barisan Nasional–Perikatan Nasional (BN-PN) intensifies its push, political analysts said. Sunway University’s Wong Chin Huat cautioned that PH should brace for losses in Malay-majority constituencies such as Bayan Lepas and Batu Maung, where BN-PN’s narrative of Malay unity could resonate strongly. He warned that PH’s survival may depend on strong turnout from non-Malay voters, particularly the Chinese community.

Universiti Sains Malaysia’s Azmil Taib added that PH can no longer rely solely on economic achievements, noting uneven development has widened social gaps. He pointed to Negeri Sembilan’s recent election, where economic progress failed to sway Malay voters, leading to PH’s defeat. Currently, PH holds 27 seats in Penang’s 40-seat assembly, with DAP controlling 19, PKR seven, and Amanah one. BN-PN collectively holds 11 seats, while two BN assemblymen cooperate under the unity government.

Both analysts stressed that PH must pivot to people-centric issues such as equality, affordability, and social justice, while carefully managing cultural and religious sensitivities. They warned that ignoring these dynamics could erode PH’s base and empower BN-PN’s campaign.
