NEW: The BNPN ummah unity narrative can be a threat to racial unity

SEREMBAN, July 24, 2026 – The “ummah unity” narrative promoted by Barisan Nasional (BN) and Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the Negeri Sembilan state election is not merely about gaining power but could threaten national unity, according to Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) communications director Khalid Abdul Samad. He said unity based solely on race or group identity amounts to assobiyyah, which is prohibited in Islam. “Is this unity built on goodness and piety, or on evil and conflict?” Khalid asked, adding that Pakatan Harapan (PH) views such efforts as a danger to Malaysia’s multiracial harmony.

Khalid stressed that unity should support a high-performing government, not undermine it. PKR information chief Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil echoed the concern, warning that portraying Malay-Muslim exclusivity risks alienating other communities. He said PH’s approach is inclusive, reflecting Malaysia’s diversity rather than monopolizing identity politics.
