KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 8, 2026 — A road enforcement operation targeting foreign drivers in the capital turned tense after authorities faced provocations during inspections carried out on Thursday.
The operation, known as Op Pewa, was conducted by the Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) with support from the Immigration Department beginning at 9am. Officers focused on identifying traffic violations involving foreign nationals, including driving without valid licences, expired road tax and lack of insurance coverage.

Tensions arose when a Bangladeshi worker was detained while driving a Toyota Unser. A man claiming to be the worker’s employer, accompanied by a local woman, attempted to defend him, insisting the employee only drove the vehicle briefly to a car wash. However, the situation subsided after enforcement officers informed him that the worker did not possess a valid driving licence.
Authorities also found foreign nationals operating heavy vehicles, motorcycles and delivery transport, including motorcycles carrying gas cylinders. Some riders allegedly attempted to evade enforcement by pretending to faint.
Kuala Lumpur JPJ director Hamidi Adam said 58 individuals, including drivers, passengers and attendants from several countries, were detained during the operation. A total of 47 vehicles were seized and 273 notices were issued for various traffic offences.
He said enforcement efforts would continue to ensure road safety and curb illegal commercial vehicle use.
