Singaporean sues Malaysian ex-girlfriend for over S$100,000 in gifts, transfers

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — A Singapore court has reopened a long-running legal dispute involving a man seeking to recover more than S$100,000 and RM21,600 from his former girlfriend after their relationship ended.

The Singaporean claimant alleged that he provided substantial financial support to the Malaysian woman during their seven-year relationship, believing they were in a committed and exclusive partnership that would lead to marriage.

According to court documents, the funds were used for insurance premiums, personal expenses, business ventures and the purchase of what he claimed would be their future matrimonial home in Malaysia. He also bought jewellery intended as an engagement gift.

Singaporean sues

The woman acknowledged receiving the money and benefits but argued that the payments were voluntary gifts. She maintained that the relationship had never been defined as exclusive and that the man had acted on his own assumptions.

A default judgment in 2022 ordered her to repay the sums after she failed to participate in proceedings. However, she later challenged the ruling, claiming she had not received the legal documents.

Deputy Registrar Lewis Tan subsequently set aside the judgment, citing issues that should be fully examined at trial, including the nature of the transfers and significant delays by both parties.

The case will now proceed to trial for a full determination of the claims.
