Two friends pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Monday (Nov 2) to an attempted Brickfields jewellery robbery involving jewellery worth RM8.2 million, Bernama reported.

Salesman Tan Kah Seng, 35, and mechanic Tan Chien Ann, 30, were jointly charged with attempting to commit the robbery while armed with a machete.

Brickfields jewellery robbery charge

The two men are accused of trying to rob jewellery supplier Toung Zheng Fay, 30, of three bags containing various types of jewellery. The alleged offence took place in front of a hotel in Brickfields at 10am on Wednesday (Oct 14).

The charge was brought under Sections 393 and 397 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code. According to Bernama, Section 393 carries a maximum jail term of seven years and a fine, while Section 397 provides for up to 14 years’ imprisonment and a fine or whipping.

Bail set for both accused

Deputy Public Prosecutor Syafika Azwa Fikri did not offer bail, citing the non-bailable nature of the offence and the high value of the jewellery involved.

Lawyer Revin Kumar, who represented both men, applied for bail. He told the court that Kah Seng is married and supports a child, his wife and his parents, who have health problems.

The lawyer said Chien Ann is divorced, earns RM2,000 a month and supports his son and his parents.

Judge Noor Aini Yusof allowed bail of RM15,000 with one surety for each of the accused.

Case returns to court on Nov 30

The court fixed Monday (Nov 30) for mention of the case.
