New: British Passenger Died After Turbulence on SIA Flight in 2024

BRISTOL, Sept 24, 2026 – An inquest has found that Geoff Kitchen, 73, from Thornbury, South Gloucestershire, died of cardiac arrest triggered by severe turbulence aboard a Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 on May 21, 2024.

The aircraft, en route from London Heathrow to Singapore, encountered a sudden drop in altitude near Myanmar’s southwest coast. Kitchen, a retired insurance professional with a history of coronary artery disease, was thrown from his seat and landed on another passenger. His wife Linda, travelling with him on a six‑week holiday, sustained spinal fractures and a head wound.

Assistant coroner Dr Peter Harrowing concluded that turbulence precipitated Kitchen’s cardiac arrest, noting his underlying condition. Post‑mortem examinations in Thailand and later in Bristol confirmed cardiac failure due to coronary artery atheroma and the physiological effects of turbulence.

The plane diverted to Bangkok, where Kitchen was pronounced dead. Linda said she was unaware of his death until two days later, having spent 10 days in hospital before returning to Bristol.

A report revealed 56 passengers were seriously injured, 23 suffered minor injuries, and Kitchen was the sole fatality. The crew made a Mayday call and landed safely in Bangkok at 08:45 GMT.
