BYD must be fuming now: SUV engine falls off electric car

A viral incident recently occurred in China where the entire electric drive unit (motor and powertrain) of a BYD SUV detached from the vehicle’s chassis.

The incident happened in Shenyang, China, during a period of heavy rainfall and severe urban flooding. A black BYD SUV was stranded in high floodwater, and the car’s entire electric motor drive unit completely dislodged from the underbelly, slipping onto the wet asphalt. Because the detachment left the motor resting under the car while still partially linked to the body, it sparked widespread jokes and memes on social media, with many online users quipping that the car “gave birth” to its own motor.
