PETALING JAYA, Oct 25 — Two DAP leaders have challenged MCA to take stronger action following the party’s walkout over Barisan Nasional’s (BN) seat allocations for the Melaka state election.
Kampar MP Chong Zhemin said MCA should consider leaving BN altogether if it is genuinely dissatisfied with how decisions are being made within the coalition.
According to Chong, the latest episode highlighted MCA’s weakened position in BN, as seats previously contested by the party were allocated to other coalition partners without its consent.
“What clearer admission could there be that MCA has no meaningful say in BN?” he said in a statement, adding that Umno appeared to be making key decisions while MCA was expected to accept them.
Challenge MCA
Separately, DAP Youth secretary Lim Chun Weng challenged MCA to contest the Melaka polls under its own logo instead of the BN banner.
He said such a move would demonstrate the party’s dignity and independence, warning that the leadership’s walkout would otherwise be viewed as political theatre aimed at attracting sympathy.
“If MCA truly feels that BN doesn’t respect it, then stop depending on the BN banner and contest the traditional seats under the MCA logo,” Lim said.
The remarks came after MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong led a walkout during BN’s candidate announcement in Melaka, protesting the allocation of seats previously contested by MCA to other parties without proper consultation.
Despite the dispute, BN named MCA vice-president Datuk Lim Ban Hong and state executive councillor Ngwe Hee Sem among its 21 candidates for the Nov 14 election.
