Chinese Goods Mislabeled as Malaysian to Evade US Tariffs

Online sellers in the U.S. are facing a surge in suspicious offers to dodge tariffs on Chinese goods by falsely labeling them as Malaysian-made. Bloomberg reports that some China-based brokers are rerouting shipments through Malaysia to exploit its lower 24% tariff, compared to U.S. tariffs as high as 145% on Chinese imports.

These offers, often sent via social media, include faking shipment origins or values. Malaysian analysts warn such schemes could harm the nation’s global trade reputation. 

Trade groups are urging authorities to investigate and stop misuse of Malaysia’s export identity to avoid stricter scrutiny and legal repercussions from U.S. regulators.
