The High Court has ordered a Threads user to publish an open apology to fashion entrepreneur Christy Ng in English and Malay newspapers. J Vikneshvra Rau, 36, who runs the account “archnionverse”, was sued by Ng for defamation.
Judge Arziah Mohamed Apandi ruled the apology must be published within four working days from 26 October, and its contents must satisfy Ng.
Court Orders Threads User to Publish Apology to Christy Ng
During committal proceedings, Vikneshvra described his financial situation. He told the court his family had disowned him, his wife had left, and he had only RM50 in his ewallet.
He said he had defaulted on his car loan and was four months behind on his apartment instalments. “I have no income but I am willing to comply,” he said.
The judge found Ng had not proven beyond reasonable doubt that he was in contempt of court. She said he was not deliberately refusing to comply but was constrained by his circumstances. Ng will therefore advance the publication costs and can recover them from him later. If he fails to pay, the amount will be added to his existing penalty.
If he doesn’t comply with the apology order, Vikneshvra must return to court on 2 November to face possible imprisonment or a fine.
