A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer was killed and three others injured after their patrol boat collided with a concrete structure during an operation off Kuala Sungai Padang, Kuala Perlis, late on October 26. Kedah and Perlis Maritime director First Admiral Romli Mustafa said five officers were attempting to intercept a boat suspected of carrying undocumented Myanmar migrants when the incident occurred at about 11.37pm.
Fatal Collision During 15-Minute Pursuit Leaves Four Officers Dead or Injured
The suspected migrant boat allegedly sped towards shore after being detected, triggering a 15-minute pursuit. Authorities believe it rammed the MMEA vessel, which then struck a concrete structure near the Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority jetty. The deceased, technical personnel Mohd Roshaimi Mohd Ridzuan, 41, was found unconscious in the sea at around 1.30am and later pronounced dead. The three injured officers suffered a fractured wrist, chest pain and rib pain, and were taken to Hospital Tuanku Fauziah for treatment.
Eleven Suspects Detained for Immigration and Smuggling Investigations
Nine suspected undocumented Myanmar migrants, comprising seven men and two women, and two Thai male boat operators were detained. They are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Act 2007. The MMEA said it would investigate the cause of the collision and continue strengthening enforcement against irregular maritime entry.
An MMEA officer died and three colleagues were injured during a pursuit of a suspected migrant boat off Kuala Perlis.
