New: Malaysia Faces Heavy Rainfall, Floods and Possible Super El Niño Heatwave

Malaysia is preparing for a challenging weather period as the 2026/2027 Northeast Monsoon begins, with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) warning of prolonged heavy rain in the coming months, followed by potentially hotter and drier conditions early next year. MetMalaysia senior director Maqrun Fadzli Mohd Fahmi said three to five episodes of continuous heavy rainfall are expected between November 2026 and January 2027, raising flood risks in vulnerable areas.

East Coast States Face Higher Flood Risk During Early Monsoon

Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang and eastern Johor are among the areas that could be affected by flooding during the monsoon’s initial phase. Residents in low-lying and flood-prone locations have been urged to monitor official forecasts, prepare early and follow evacuation instructions when necessary. MetMalaysia said it would issue heavy-rain warnings as conditions develop.

Super El Niño Could Bring Drought and Water Shortages

From late January to March 2027, rainfall is expected to decline, potentially bringing heatwaves, drought and water shortages. Maqrun Fadzli said El Niño was already in a strong phase and could intensify into a Super El Niño towards the end of this year and into next year. The public is advised to follow updates through MetMalaysia’s official channels and avoid open burning during dry conditions to reduce the risk of localised haze.

MetMalaysia warns Malaysians to prepare for monsoon floods first, with possible extreme heat and drought later in the season.
