President Donald Trump has proposed a $2,000 (RM8,300) tariff rebate for low- and middle-income Americans, funded by revenue from import duties. He argued tariffs have made the U.S. “the richest, most respected country,” but critics warn they raise consumer prices and fuel trade tensions. 

Congress Approval Needed for Trump’s Tariff Checks

While Trump likened the rebates to pandemic stimulus checks, experts note congressional approval would be required, making the plan unlikely. 

Treasury officials say no formal proposal exists, and analysts estimate such payments could cost $326 billion (RM1.3 trillion). Supporters see potential relief, but economists caution the impact would be modest, with funds likely routed through tax adjustments.
