DAP Johor Leader Urges Anwar to Fire Zahid from Cabinet

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 21, 2026 — DAP Johor deputy chairman Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali has called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to remove his deputy, Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, from the cabinet, arguing Zahid has undermined the government.

Sheikh Umar said Zahid embarrassed Anwar during the recent Umno General Assembly by openly challenging government policies, including the Budi95 initiative, despite being part of the same cabinet. “He ridiculed the Prime Minister while the world respects Anwar’s leadership. Zahid should resign, not Anthony Loke,” he said, referring to the transport minister’s offer to step down following Najib Razak’s conditional pardon.

He suggested Zahid could be replaced by other Umno leaders such as Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin or Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Johari Abdul Ghani, whom he described as more committed to safeguarding the government’s reputation.

Zahid, who is also Umno president, had challenged PH to remove Umno from Putrajaya and call a snap election, warning that PH would not have formed government in 2022 without BN’s support. He stressed Umno’s role in securing Anwar’s premiership, though later clarified his remarks did not signal a no-confidence move.
