DAP still the ‘lesser evil’ for Chinese voters?

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 20, 2026 — A Facebook post questioning the fate of the DAP following former prime minister Najib Razak’s conditional pardon has triggered heated discussion online.

The post, written by Betty Teh, a declared member of the new party Bersama, asked: “Chinese can still accept DAP after this?” — referring to Najib’s house arrest decision. While Bersama condemned the pardon, many users defended DAP, saying the party remained the main voice of the Chinese community in government.

One user, Peter Hcley, argued there was “no alternative” to DAP, while Lookazon Chew noted that despite anger over Najib’s pardon, DAP’s support base remained intact. Others said the pardon was unrelated to DAP, with Keng Fuan Wong stressing it was the King’s prerogative.

Bersama leader Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli urged Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and PH leaders to disclose the full conditions of Najib’s house arrest, saying transparency was owed to Malaysians. He added that enforcement must be strict to maintain public trust.

Najib was granted a conditional pardon on Sept 18, allowing him to serve his sentence under house arrest until Aug 23, 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine.
