Dr Mahathir weeps as Dr Hasmah laid to rest

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 29, 2026, Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday endured one of his most difficult moments as he accompanied his late wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, to her final resting place at Pusara Negara, Putrajaya.

Arriving in a motorised wheelchair and aided by an oxygen tube, Mahathir remained present throughout the funeral rites, from the family residence to prayers at As-Syarif Mosque, Taman Sungai Besi Indah, before the burial. Thousands of congregants filled the mosque and surrounding areas to pay their respects.

Visibly despondent, Mahathir was seen gazing at his wife’s remains before joining the prayers. At the cemetery, he watched solemnly as her remains were lowered into the grave, shedding tears during the final moments beside the woman who had shared his life for seven decades.

Married on Aug. 5, 1956, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year. Siti Hasmah, who died at the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday morning at the age of 100, was more than a spouse — she was Mahathir’s lifelong companion, confidante, and pillar of support through his long political career.

Their warmth, humour, and affection endeared them to Malaysians, making their partnership a symbol of enduring love and devotion.
