Malaysia Rail Link (MRL) has refuted a claim by a Chinese expert suggesting that the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) trains could be upgraded to reach speeds of 351km/h. MRL emphasized that the maximum speed for the trains is 160km/h, and the rail infrastructure is specifically designed for speeds under 200km/h.

ECRL is not HSR
The trains are primarily intended for cargo transportation, with 70% of revenue projected from freight and 30% from passengers. MRL noted that the rail alignment, with horizontal curves and gradients, is not suited for high-speed rail, particularly in areas with poor soil conditions in the East Coast states. So it is not a high-speed train. Does it matter?
