A video showing an XPeng electric car owner bending down and tilting his head to the side to complete a facial recognition identity check has gone viral on Chinese social media platform Weibo. The camera the app chose to use was near the car’s front bumper and pretty close to the ground. After receiving feedback about “poor user experience,” XPeng Motors issued a statement apologising to the affected customers and explaining that they had taken down the app after a software update required users to do facial recognition, invoking risk controls. This is not the first time XPeng Motors has had trouble with facial recognition, having been fined for illegally collecting facial images in December 2021.
