Over the past five years, a total of 13 deaths resulting from wild elephant attacks have been recorded in Malaysia. According to records from PERHILITAN of Peninsular Malaysia, the estimated financial loss due to human-elephant conflicts amounts to RM40.21 million during the same period.

The Minister of Natural Resources Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, says the human-elephant conflicts are primarily caused by land-use activities, such as land clearing for agriculture, which result in the loss and fragmentation of elephant habitats.
