EV Owner Sparks Debate Over Safety of Using Air-Conditioning While Parked

A social media post by EV owner @syafiqyuhzaid has sparked a discussion among Malaysian electric vehicle users about the safety of keeping the air-conditioning running while parked.

The post asked fellow EV drivers whether sitting inside a vehicle with the air-conditioning switched on for extended periods carries significant risks. The question attracted responses from other users sharing experiences ranging from waiting at border crossings to spending several hours inside their cars. 

EV Owners Discuss Air-Cond, Battery Use and Safety Risks

One commenter said they had waited at a border checkpoint with the EV’s air-conditioning running while another claimed to have remained inside an EV for more than two hours.

Others highlighted battery consumption, with one user noting that extended use of climate control could reduce available range. EVs can operate their air-conditioning while stationary without idling a combustion engine, although the system still draws power from the battery. 

The discussion also touched on concerns about carbon monoxide. Unlike petrol or diesel vehicles, EVs do not produce tailpipe exhaust while operating their climate systems, meaning the usual engine-exhaust CO risk is not present.

However, users should still follow the manufacturer’s guidance and remain alert to ventilation, battery level and the conditions of the parking environment.
