Ex-PM Mahathir admitted to IJN following wife’s death

Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) yesterday (29 September) for routine treatment and observation.

His press secretary, Sufi Yusoff, said the 101-year-old was feeling exhausted and had not been getting enough sleep following the death of his wife, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, last Monday (28 September).

According to Berita Harian, Sufi said the emotional strain, hot weather and lack of rest were not an ideal combination for someone of Mahathir’s age.

Dr Hasmah, 100, passed away at IJN last Monday. She was later laid to rest at the Heroes’ Mausoleum (Pusara Negara) in Precinct 20, Putrajaya, following a state funeral ceremony held in recognition of her service.

Following his wife’s death, Mahathir said she had appeared to be in good health the night before and that he had not expected her sudden passing.

Their son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, said his father remained by Dr Hasmah’s side until her final moments.

Another son, Mokhzani Mahathir, said their mother had been cheerful and in good spirits the night before her death, before her health suddenly deteriorated the following day.

Mahathir’s admission comes days after the death of his wife, with his family having remained by her side during her final moments.
