Malaysian activist Fadiah Nadwa Fikri, who recently earned her doctorate in Southeast Asian Studies from the National University of Singapore (NUS), was denied entry into Singapore and deported after being labelled an “undesirable visitor” by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
MHA Labels Fadiah Nadwa an ‘Undesirable Visitor’
Fadiah revealed the incident on X, saying authorities refused to disclose the reasons for her deportation. MHA later explained that she had engaged in political activism, encouraging students to mobilise communities and adopt disruptive or violent methods to support certain causes.
The ministry stressed that foreigners are not allowed to interfere in Singapore’s domestic politics. Fadiah, who lived in Singapore for five years, said she had intended to deliver a lecture to her former supervisor’s students and collect her books and academic certificate.
She described the ban as “stunning,” highlighting her research focus on decolonisation and anti-imperialism, and questioned the decision given her academic contributions.
