His restaurant, which relies heavily on Singaporean patrons, was quieter than usual due to the new Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) rule implemented by Malaysia. Many Singaporeans avoided crossing the border, leading to a 20% drop in vehicles entering Malaysia. Fortunately, the authorities delayed strict enforcement of the VEP, issuing only warnings for now. Mr. Chan hopes this will reassure Singaporean visitors and encourage them to return, as they make up 70% of his clientele.
