It was Mr. Habib, originally from Pakistan. One fine day, Mr. Ismail introduced him as an excellent teacher who would assist us for a while. I’ve forgotten which subject he taught; it’s too far back in my memories. But Habib was diligent, brilliant, and a bit authoritarian. I couldn’t ask too many questions in class, or I risked being expelled with Mr. Habib’s loud voice shouting, “Kazi, get out!” Smiling, I would leave the room. One day, Mr. Ismail saw me in the hallway near the classroom and asked, “Well, why are you here? Aren’t you in class?”
Mr Habib’s patience
Then, I explained to Mr. Ismail, the school principal, that Mr. Habib would send me out every time I questioned his teaching methods. Of course, Ismail went to see Habib and asked me to return to class. Then, he took Mr. Habib to his office. About ten minutes later, Habib came back. From that day on, Habib stopped reprimanding me and kicking me out of class. He had taken my criticism well this time. Poor Mr. Habib and his wife kept asking me to forgive him, saying it was an Islamic gesture on their part, especially since he was soon leaving for Pakistan by plane. I replied, “No, if you forgive me for teasing him, that’s enough to settle everything.” End of the story: we shook hands and said goodbye. I’ve never seen him again.
P.S.: Mr. Habib didn’t have a beard.
