BANGKOK: A Malaysian couple on their honeymoon inadvertently sparked a security alert in central Bangkok after authorities discovered their vehicle parked in a restricted area during heightened security measures for the IMF-World Bank Annual Meetings.
The Malaysian-registered car was spotted on a footpath in the Lumpini district on 13 October, prompting concern among police officers monitoring the area. Given the international meetings under way and tightened security across the Thai capital, bomb disposal officers and sniffer dogs were deployed to inspect the vehicle.
A search of the car uncovered seven containers carrying a total of 40 litres of fuel. However, initial checks found no explosive materials or other illegal items, easing fears of a potential threat.
Honeymooners
Police later located the vehicle’s owners, a Malaysian couple who had entered Thailand on 11 October for their honeymoon. The pair told investigators they were travelling across several provinces before returning home on 17 October.
They explained that the extra fuel had been purchased in Malaysia as a precaution because they were unfamiliar with the routes and expected to cover long distances during their road trip.
The couple also said they parked near a shopping mall after being informed by a taxi driver that it was permitted and were unaware Bangkok was hosting the international economic meetings.
Authorities fined them 2,000 baht for illegal parking before returning the fuel, which was within the legal limit.
