Formula One’s return to the Sepang International Circuit after a nine-year absence has revived hopes that Malaysia could once again become a regular host of the world’s premier motorsport championship. The 2026 race attracted 261,000 spectators over the weekend, setting a new attendance record for the circuit and surpassing the previous high of 126,690 recorded during the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix.

The return was filled with drama as heavy rain delayed the race by 93 minutes before drivers eventually competed on a wet track. Fans remained at the circuit despite the weather, with the atmosphere reflecting the strong appetite for F1 following Malaysia’s last official race in 2017. Max Verstappen won the race, while Lewis Hamilton finished third.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has confirmed that discussions are already underway over the possibility of Malaysia hosting F1 again. Further talks are expected with F1 president and CEO Stefano Domenicali. While no long-term agreement has been reached, the record turnout and enthusiastic response from fans have strengthened hopes that Sepang could once again feature regularly on the F1 calendar.
F1’s return to Sepang drew a record 261,000 spectators and has reignited hopes for Malaysia to host the championship again.
